Scoutmaster Minute -- 7 December 2021

In today's day and age, it does not take that many missed showers before someone tells you that you are unclean.  Think of the smell after a summer campout or a long hike.  Whether we see it in our reflection or catch a whiff from our armpits, many times we know well before someone tells us.  Mental cleanliness is different altogether.  Often we will not get another person's assessment as only we know what is truly going on in our minds.  Staying mentally clean and morally straight takes personal determination and dedication to solid principles, like that of our faith, our family's values and the Scout Oath and Law.  We cannot expect to maintain mental cleanliness if we fill our minds with garbage.  Just like on a campout, periodically one has to stop and do a 'police call' and ask, "does this belong here?"  Unlike the police calls at a campout, the SPL is not there to keep you in line; in mental cleanliness, that leadership over oneself must come from within.
