As any geologist, he or she will tell you that diamonds are made by heat and pressure. Just like diamonds, we are carbon based and we achieve our optimal form through the application of heat and pressure. Now diamonds form at pressures of 4.5 to 6 gigapascals, which is approximately 45 to 60 thousand times atmospheric pressure. This kind of pressure is typically found at depths of 87 to 118 miles beneath the Earth’s surface. As humans, our ‘pressure’ occurs from rigorous study, intense concentration, hard labor, physical exercise, application of self-control, and the positive influence of others – people like mom and dad, mentors, coaches and friends. Yes, that’s right, friends. Friends provide us with peer pressure. We too often focus on negative peer pressure and fail to recognize the value of positive peer pressure. We can be a better version of ourselves when we listen to constructive feedback from others. Likewise, we can be a true friend and truly loyal when we tell others not just what they want to hear but what they need to hear, not out of malice but out of love so they can be the best versions of themselves.
If you have ever been to an Eagle Court of Honor, you have heard Eagle Scouts recite the Eagle Oath. A portion of that oath goes, “On my honor I will do my best to make my training an example, my rank and my influence count strongly for better Scouting and for better citizenship in my Troop, in my community, and in my contacts with other people.” This influence speaks to positive peer pressure. If you saw your friend stumble, no doubt you would help him or her up. Likewise, if you see your friend in a moral lapse, you have an obligation to help him or her get back on the right path. Lastly, if you are the one that is veering away from the Scout Oath and Law, listen to the input of others to help you get back on track. Like the diamond, we too are formed of heat and pressure. Trust the process and may you shine.
On my honor, I will do my best. A Scout is Loyal, Helpful and Friendly.
