Scoutmaster Minute -- 19 March 2024

Today I want to share with you information about this really great place to hang out. It is so awesome that it improves your mood and gives you energy. The air is fresh and the decoration there changes frequently – right now it is absolutely amazing!

Where is this great place? It is outside. This is the prime time to see the outside. Now, after a cold winter, our Earth has tilted its axis and we are now enjoying spring. Go out in it. Run, walk, bike, row, toss a ball – whatever suits you best, but do not squander spring because soon the summer's heat will present a counterchallenge to the winter's cold. Drink plenty of water and dress in layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures. Spring has sprung and our part of the world is now cast in vibrant color. All you need to do is open the door and go see it.

I will keep myself physically strong.

Scoutmaster Minute -- 12 March 2024

In my pack I carry a pair of old switchback Scout pants. I had not worn them in years, as I normally do not change pants during a weekend camping trip. Yet I pack them because they are on the Cool Weather Packing List and the packing list is built on our experiences as a Troop and what we have determined that Scouts and Scouters need to survive in a particular season. This weekend those old pants proved clutch, as the pair I wore from home got soaked in Saturday night's torrential rain. I am so glad I had a dry pair, because otherwise I would have had to wear cold wet pants on Sunday morning.

It is so much better to have and not need than to need and not have. This is the essence of being prepared. I encourage you to follow the packing list closely. If anything, throw in another pair of socks. You may seldom need some things, but seldom does come around and having a piece of necessary kit can transform miserable to bearable, if not downright comfortable. Packing the right stuff may someday save your life.

Be Prepared!

Many of you are familiar with Aristotle, a great philosopher in Ancient Greece and still considered one of the greatest philosophers in mankind. In his writings, Nicomachean Ethics, he wrote:

"Men become builders by building and lyre players by playing the lyre; so too we become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts."

In essence, Aristotle says that we become what we want to be by doing the things of the person we want to be. For example, if one wants to cultivate the reputation of a trustworthy person, he or she must tell the truth. Want to be seen as approachable? Better practice being friendly. Want to be known as being brave? Then one needs to practice facing and overcoming one's fears.

Weekly we say a Scout Oath that gives our intent, to do our best, to do many things, to include living according to the Scout Law. That Scout Law is a collection of virtues that we strive for, but make no mistake – they are contrary to the natural human condition of error, of pride, of greed, of selfishness and of paralyzing self-preservation vice tending to the needs of others.

Consider what you want to be – what you want to be known for. Know that you must practice those traits with the same consciousness as you do when learning a new knot or taking up a new physical exercise. To be what you want to be, you must do those things associated with those virtues.

A Scout is.
