Scoutmaster Minute, 29 July 2025

In the 1976 song, "Fly Like an Eagle," Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band sings "time keeps on slipping, into the future." We know this is a true statement, as time waits for no one. Time is arguably our most valuable resource. Sometimes we think it is money, but money comes and goes. Time only goes and each of us has finite time on Earth. Yet, we all waste a lot of time doom scrolling social media, watching You Tube or Tic Toc videos, playing phone games, etc. Many things we could be doing to be more productive do not happen because we are squandering time, procrastinating, drifting… slipping into the future. I encourage you to manage and protect your time. Particularly if you want to "fly like an Eagle" and earn that Eagle Rank, awareness and working within your time is paramount. Show time the same care as you do a pocket full of money, as time is arguably more valuable.

A Scout is Thrifty.

Scoutmaster Minute, July 8, 2025

Next Sunday we embark on an adventure. We don our Class A uniforms and take off to Camp Tuckahoe in Pennsylvania. Out before us a camp we haven't traveled to before, knowledge to be gained in merit badge classes, and new friends to be made by all.

While we are out on this adventure not only to we represent Scouting America, we are also representatives of our troop, our council, and St. Matthews.

We should endeavor to be kind to the staff and fellow campers. Courteous to the camp by being clean in our indoor and outdoor manners. We should be cheerful in our skits during the campfire program. We should be brave in trying new skills and learning about professions. We should be obedient in adhering to the packing list.

See everyone at LRMS 11:30 am on Sunday.

Be Prepared for a new adventure.

Scoutmaster's Minute, 1 July 2025

We know from our Leave No Trace principles that we are to "leave only footprints." We are to be reminded that just like in the physical world, in the digital world we also leave footprints. Yet, unlike the physical world where our footprints are erased by the wind and rain, often in the digital world the evidence of where we have trod is like stepping in wet concrete, leaving behind permanent markers of our activity. This is important to remember when we post on social media – we ae free to say what we want, but we are not free from judgement. Those thoughts that we put in writing are often discoverable and are open source to college admissions, scholarship boards, potential employers and security clearance adjudicators. Choose your words wisely, show discretion, and do not post anything you would not want your grandmother to read. When in doubt, don't post anything at all. Keyboard warriors carry no honor so don't aim to be one.
